UK Rabies Import Requirements Are Changing: What Pet Owners Need to Know (Effective December 1)
The UK rabies import requirements are changing. From December 1, the waiting period for certain rabies vaccinations will depend on the manufacturer’s guidance as stated in the official datasheet.
Previously, a blanket minimum waiting period of 21 days after the rabies vaccination was administered was accepted for entry into Great Britain, regardless of the vaccine’s specific onset of immunity. However, some manufacturers state that immunity may take longer than 21 days to develop sufficient antibody levels.
What Changes on December 1?
From December 1, a rabies vaccine will only
be considered valid for entry into the UK if:
- The waiting period specified in the vaccine manufacturer’s datasheet has passed, if it is longer than 21 days, and/or
- A minimum of 21 days has passed since the primary vaccination (or the final dose in the primary vaccination course)
Vaccines Affected by the New UK Requirements
Some commonly used vaccines that require a longer waiting period include:
- Boehringer Ingelheim products
- Purevax Feline Rabies
- Rabisin
- All Imrab vaccines
For these specific rabies vaccines, you must wait 30 days after vaccination before entering the UK.
